Spread the bread cubes on a cookie sheet a couple days before making if possible so they dry out. Butter a square glass baking dish (can also use a smaller but taller dish if you want 2 layers), and place the dried bread in the dish. In a pot, heat the milk, 1/4 cup sugar and butter. Bring to a boil and add more sugar if you want it sweeter, then pour over the bread pieces. Mix poppy seeds with 1/4 cup sugar and stir into the milk mixture. Push the bread down with a fork so it soaks into the milk mixture. Leave it until all the milk is soaked in by the bread, occasionally pushing it down with a fork. (Typically takes about 1/2 - 1 hour for this to be completed). Cover with foil and bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. Remove foil for last 5 minutes if you want the top to be crunchy. Drizzle heated honey on top. NOTE: Can make this the night before, store in the fridge and just pop in the oven to cook in the morning. May need to bake a little longer since it just came out of the frigdge. |
